It’s a Colourful Life – Christmas Home Tour

This year I was invited to join some of my favourite bloggers on a Christmas home tour.
The gorgeous Jennifer from Dimples & Tangles and Rachel from Pencil Shaving Studio put this one together and I am so excited with the group of gorgeous girls they have handpicked for you!

Colorful Life Christmas 18 Graphic
Firstly, let me just say I am totally chuffed to be part of such a fabulous group. I feel like I’ve found my tribe with these colour loving gals, their homes are bright, bold and beautiful and I love them all.

OK, If you are following the tour, you’ve probably just come from the self-proclaimed freak herself, Jenna from Rain on a Tin Roof, her pops of bright colour and amazing wallpaper selections always makes me smile.
(The full list of the home tour is at the bottom of this post)

Let’s go!
Today I’m going to share my living room and bedroom with you.

I recently discovered plaid, I mean I knew it existed, but I have ever used it in my home before. Then I found a fabulous plaid at Pottery Barn that has a touch of blue in it, so it mixes back with my #blueandwhite home beautifully. Now, I have a little obsession with plaid, OK, make that a BIG obsession with plaid! It was my inspiration for this years Christmas colour palette, I pulled the red and green from the plaid, and added it to my existing blue and white decor.

I’ve also added lots of metallic accents like mercury glass, silver and galvanised metal to give it some sparkle!

Lets start in my living area where you are welcomed with pops of red and lots of plaid which is perfect with my blue and white ticking sofa.

My favourite thing is this room is the sweet pillow with embroidered and beaded details. The colour and art have a vintage vibe that I adore, and the map of the North Pole has been a great conversation starter with the kids.

I also adore these gorgeous little sugared fruit decorations that I found at my supermarket for 80 cents each, proving that it doesn’t cost a fortune to decorate your home!

Just off the living room and next to the kitchen is this little area that I have turned into a FROZEN hot chocolate bar. It’s summer in Australia and too hot for the traditional hot chocolate so we’ve put in our own spin on it. The kids absolutely love it and it’s getting quite the workout!

Everyone has their own mug and we have a few spares for guests.

I designed the artwork myself and my Dad brought it to life. It was a quick and easy activity and I love that it is personalised with our family name.
I bought the large frame from a local thrift store for a few dollars, the frame was originally a yellow pine wood, it only took me a few minutes to spray paint it white. My Dad has a giant printing machine so he printed my artwork to look like a blackboard, I’m sure you could get this done at your local printers. Then I added 2 small brass rings to the top of the frame to use the ribbon for hanging.

And as for the frozen hot chocolate, here’s a couple I prepared earlier …

Let’s go to my bedroom next where the backdrop of my blue walls really makes the red and plaid pop!

I’ve paired it with all white bed linen to keep it from looking too dark, and added the Merry & Bright pillowslips for a festive touch.

I popped some traditional Christmas flowers – amaryllis – on the bedsides in these gorgeous glass vases, I love the little bit of sparkle the mercury glass vase brings.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my colourful Christmas home tour!
I’ll be sharing more of my Christmas decor over the next few weeks on my Instagram here.

Now, refresh your cup of tea or glass of wine, and pop over to all of Tuesdays and Wednesday’s home tours, they are listed below, seriously guys, there is so much inspiration in these gals homes and style, you don’t want to miss them!

Gloria’s granddaughters house …

As promised … presenting the incredible home of half of the Gloria Linen and Home team.

This stunning little cottage is nestled in the hinterland at Montville on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Our shy owner worked with the the gorgeous girls at Highgate House to complete this project.

When our owner found the property it was not the beautiful space you see today, but she could see the potential and engaged Leigh Boswell from Highgate House to make her vision a reality.

And doesn’t it look amazing!

Lets start with the master suite. I love the gentle colour palette of white, browns and duck egg blue. It is relaxed and serene, but still packs a punch with the statement mirror and custom made roman blinds, that fabric is dreamy!

The cabinetry is stunning. The beautiful design with the mirror back was all custom made and doesn’t it look incredible?

The bathroom is finished with custom cabinetry, marble bench tops and floors, and beautiful shiny nickel fixtures.

The living space is finished in the same gentle colour palette as the bedroom which makes the little cottage flow beautifully. It is a small space, but it has everything you need without compromising on style.

Off the living area is this delightful little dining area complete with banquette seating and two statement chairs. The singular chairs have open backs that allow the space to feel open, but they also have a graphic design that acts as another piece of interest in the room.

And finally the kitchen, wow, just wow!

The lovely cast iron setting on the deck was a lucky Gumtree find that was re-powdercoated to bring it back to it’s former glory.

I could quite happily live there forever, isn’t it beautiful.

Real Homes : Melissa and Jason.

We all see those amazing photos in the glossy magazines of those incredible houses that are styled to perfection. They are decorated with designer furniture and trinkets that are so expensive, most of us would have to sell one of our kidneys to afford them. I thought it would be fun to take a peek in some ‘real’ homes of ‘real’ people. Homes where people live and play, with children and animals, with handprints on the wall, and furniture bought from shops that we can actually afford.

What do y’all think?

First up is one of my besties homes, you can probably tell why we are friends, we have similar taste, and we shop well together (when we’re not bitch fighting over a ginger jar). I know your going to love her home as much as I do.

Mel and Jason bought this home about 6 years ago and have slowly renovated the whole home, room by room.

Lets start with the front entry, where you can just catch a glimpse of the gorgeous home beyond. The downstairs flooring is polished concrete with a gold fleck through it, although its hard to capture in photos, it is rather pretty.

Through the front entry, you naturally gravitate toward the casual living area. They call it the ‘man cave’ but I’ve got to tell you, it’s about as far from a man cave as you can get. Mel has slowly brought in pretty pieces and made it into a beautiful room, full of coastal charm and beautiful blues. It opens out to the waterfront with a wall of bi-fold shutters and is light filled and airy. Everyone loves this room, and as it was originally meant to be Jason’s media man cave, he is happy to accept all compliments about this room, and often takes credit for Mel’s interior decorating skills. Yes Jay-son (his self appointed interior designer name), nobody believes you!

Let’s move into the kitchen. Mel and Jason have kept most of the original kitchen, but just by changing the back splash and rangehood, and adding a new floral blind and pendant lights they have updated it and given it loads of character.

This attention demanding cabinet houses all of Mel’s pretty china, she has a weakness for jugs, can you tell? Also in the kitchen area is a little desk nook, I love this idea, because lets face it, most of our paperwork piles up in the kitchen and never makes it to the office!

The kitchen leads on to the dining room which is a beautiful room surrounded by white shutters, it feels intimate and is perfect for dining.

On the other side of the dining room is the formal living area. I say formal, but nothing is too formal here. Mel and Jason have created a relaxed family home where you feel comfortable enough to throw your feet up on the couch, which is just the way I like it.

Also downstairs you will find a beautiful, blue, guest bedroom with stunning wallpaper and classic bed linens. Wouldn’t you love to be a guest here?

The downstairs / guest bathroom is timeless and stunning with a selection of subway tiles hand picked by Mel and Jason. They work well together and this bathroom is my favourite.

No room has been left untouched, even the laundry has had a facelift, and isn’t it gorgeous with it’s butlers sink and nautical wall display. And those lights are pretty special too!

Lets go upstairs and have a peek in Mel and Jason’s bedroom and ensuite. Their bedroom is decorated in an array of beautiful blues and feels relaxed and peaceful. The ensuite is finished with layers of marble tiles and shiny nickel hardware. It flows perfectly and feels serene, just like a master bedroom should.

And just because Mel and Jason are so good at renovating bathrooms I thought I’d show you the third bathroom as well. It is the kids bathroom, and is also finished beautifully.

What do you think? Isn’t is a beautiful family home?

FYI : All photos were taken by me (not a pro photographer) on my iPhone, on a rather dull day. Sorry! I hope I did your beautiful home justice Mel! xx

Blue and White Forever.

It was only a matter of time until I wrote a post about my love for everything blue and white! I like to use blue and white like a ‘neutral’ in my home, It mixes well with other colours, I particularly love it with pink or green. I use blue and white for cushions, paints, wallpapers, linens and of course for a ginger jar … or two!

And that is where the real addiction begins, with the ginger jar … or two …or three … and the collection grows and grows …

I’ve been a blue and white lover since I decorated my first home with my (now) husband back in 1996. We had a little fishing shack that we renovated, my husband did all the building work while I sewed curtains and made everything look as pretty as I could with our tiny budget. Everything was blue and white, from the bathroom tiles to the floral curtains. I added pops of yellow back then, I remember a hideous bunch of faux yellow tulips that adorned my dining table, eek!

We’ve come a long way in the past 20 years and things have changed, but my love of blue and white is still strong. Over the years I have gone through stages of collecting different blue and white things, then I realise I have far too many, I decide to have a big clean out, then I regret it and start collecting again. Oh, how I wish I’d kept my epic wall plate collection from 2007!

Some pieces I buy because – “Hello, it’s so cheap, how could I leave it there?”. Others because I fall in love with them and simply cannot leave the shop without them.

Due to my current slightly out of control, maybe, just a little bit … blue and white collection, my personal rule for the future is to only buy pieces I truly love, or truly need.

I though I’d share with you my favourite pieces and my ultimate blue and white lovers wish list.
