Blue & White or Pops of Colour?

July 1, 2015 by Hayley 3 Comments

Do you have a favourite interior colour? Maybe you have one favourite colour that you mix with others? Or do you have a set of favourite colours that you like to style together?

You probably all know I love blue, all shades of blues from the palest baby blue right through to the deepest indigo blue. I use blue as a base for most of our home, then I add other colours to change up the mood in different rooms. I feel like the consistency of blue creates a gentle flow through our home.

Blue mixes well with most colours. I especially love navy blue with pink or kelly green, and of course blue and white is always pure perfection.

Lately I find myself drawn to a wider palette of greens, melons, lilacs, and all colours of the rainbow. I am still a blue and white lover, and won’t be getting rid of my ginger jars any time soon, but …

I’m considering going in a slightly different direction in our next home. I haven’t made any plans because I feel like I need to move in and learn about the natural lighting in the home before I decide. But I’m starting to look at options …

Some of my favourite interiors are primarily blue and white.

I love this look, it is classic and classy. The bamboo blinds, cane pieces and wood top coffee table ground the room while providing some warmth to the cool blue tones. But this look would mean cutting back on colourful accessories because it is a very strict colour palette.

But then again, I really love this look of all white with pops of colour.

I think this look would be so fun as your colour palette is not so restricted. The walls, cabinetry and furniture are all a very neutral white, while the accessories and textiles are bright gem shades that really pop against the white palette. I feel this look is much more relaxed and perfect for a young families lifestyle.

What do y’all think?

Is it OK to do a strict blue and white scheme in my living areas, and then do the pops of colour in the bedrooms? Or will this spoil the flow of the house?

I’d love to know what your thought are!

Peacocks and Paisleys.

If you’re a bohemian at heart, with a love of artfully designed textiles, then you’ve come to the right place.

Peacocks and Paisleys is an Australian based business that collaborates with Indian artisans to create the most beautiful textiles. Pieces such as quilt covers, kanthas, tablecloths and cushions that are crafted from soft cottons using traditional techniques. One of those techniques is block printing.

The process of block printing fascinates me, and I wanted to share the steps of the technique with you all.

BLOCK PRINTING

The first step is to design a pattern to be printed, which is then carved into a wood block. The wood block is carefully prepared as a relief pattern, which means the areas to show ‘white’ are cut away with a knife, chisel and sandpaper, which leaves the raised pattern to print in ‘black’.

The cotton or cloth needs to be thoroughly washed to remove any starches. Then it must be laid flat on a hard surface ready to be printed.

The block is inked and ‘stamped’ onto the cloth with firm and even contact. An artisan carefully places the block on top of the fabric and presses or ‘hammers’ the back of the block to create a uniform print.

For colourful designs, multiple blocks are used, one for each colour.

After the printing process is complete the cloth is dryed in the sun to set the ink.

India’s hand blocking skills have been handed down through generations. It is a labour intensive technique and unfortunately it is a dying craft. I hope it will be preserved. The pieces this techniques creates are unique and beautiful.

Peacocks and Paisleys has an extensive range of block printed textiles in a range of styles to fit in any home.

The Boho Scandinavian range is the latest from Peacocks and Paisleys. Featuring black and white designs in pineapples, palm trees, paisley patterns and geometric designs. It is fresh and easy to work into most decor schemes.

I used a couple of the Boho Scandi items in my little boys bedrooms and I love it.

Another favourite of mine is the Modern Bohemian Collection. It has the prettiest floral design of aqua and pink through to pinky reds and deep greens.

I have the tablecloth and let me tell you, the colours are so vibrant and it is even more beautiful in person than I imagined.

The Indigo Hamptons collection is very popular, especially with all you blue and white lovers out there, the entire range is a stunning shade of indigo. It includes table linens, bed linens and decorative cushions.

These a just a few collections and pieces from the Peacocks and Paisleys range. You can view the full range here.

If you are making your first purchase of a block printed pieces I recommend considering a Kantha. I have a couple and I find them very versatile and easy to use with lots of styling options. They are lightweight, light enough for an Australian summer, but also great for layering in winter.

Here is one of my kanthas that I have had for quite some time. It has been thrown in the washing machine (on a delicate cycle) more times than I can count, and gets softer with every wash. As you can see it has been used in many rooms of our house and fits in well with different styles and colours.

It is the Mint Provence Patchwork Kantha.

And what’s next on my wish list? – The Twilight Taj Quilt! It is absolutely amazing, the intricate printing detail and blue edging is dreamy.

Have you noticed how many fabulously stylish restaurants and cafes have opened lately. My friends and I love popping in for a coffee or a meal just to check out the beautiful decor.

Here are is one that will have you drooling, over the decor as well as the food!

Nantucket Kitchen & Bar

It is located at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, in Brisbane, QLD.

It is inspired by the owners love of Cape Cod style, filled with white walls, dark hardwood floors and splashes of green.

We’re moving!!!

June 24, 2015 by Hayley 10 Comments

There is big news in the Little household!

We are moving!

We move in just over a month, it has been the world longest contract (6 months) and since it is getting so close I’m really starting to get excited!

It’s a little sad, this beautiful home that we have literally put our blood, sweat and tears into has been sold. On the other hand, I am super excited to do it all again. The thought of choosing new light fixtures and tap ware gets me more excited than a kid at Christmas!

Here is a few pictures of the transformation of our home. Please excuse the un-styled pics, they are the real estate pictures.  I can’t believe how much I have changed things since these photos were taken, lol!
