Mixing Patterns in your home…

I often get told I am so brave with the way I mix patterns and textiles in my home. Quite a funny statement to me as I always feel like I am choosing the safe option, and I never feel brave myself!

I also get asked it there is a method to mixing patterns. I’ve never really thought about it before, but I do have an instinct that seems to work, most of the time, I have had a few disasters. I sat down and tried to put words to the babble in my head when choosing fabrics, wallpapers and other textiles to layer in a room.

Here’s how I work –

1. Mix patterns of different sizes. It can look a little messy and overwhelming if you don’t balance out the scales of pattern. Choose 1 large pattern, 1 medium and 1 or 2 small patterns, and don’t forget to add some solid colour to let your eye rest.

Below is a picture of my living room. Just out of shot is my large 3 seater sofa, it is the largest piece in the room and it is plain linen, then my 2 rattan chairs are upholstered in a small herringbone print. My cushions are all medium size floral patterns and the throw is a large scale shibori pattern.

2. Mix a floral with a graphic, with an animal print, with an ikat, etc…. I’m not a big fan of a room full of florals, it can look a little too granny, and a room full of graphics looks a little harsh for me. Mix them up!

3. If your mixing patterns it’s important to keep your colour palette under control, that doesn’t mean you can’t mix colours. I just like to restrict it to no more than 3-4 colours. You should choose a primary colour that will pull the room together, an accent colour and 1-2 small pops of colour. If one of your patterns has multiple colours in it, pull the other colours from it, as I’ve done in the photo above and below.

Alternatively you can choose 1 colour and really layer up the patterns, this always looks fabulous, especially with indigo/blue like the picture of my old bedroom below.

Don’t be afraid to use this guideline for wallpaper and art too.

But remember – Rules are meant to be broken, play around, and have fun. This is your home and should reflect your personality!

Gloria’s granddaughters house …

As promised … presenting the incredible home of half of the Gloria Linen and Home team.

This stunning little cottage is nestled in the hinterland at Montville on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Our shy owner worked with the the gorgeous girls at Highgate House to complete this project.

When our owner found the property it was not the beautiful space you see today, but she could see the potential and engaged Leigh Boswell from Highgate House to make her vision a reality.

And doesn’t it look amazing!

Lets start with the master suite. I love the gentle colour palette of white, browns and duck egg blue. It is relaxed and serene, but still packs a punch with the statement mirror and custom made roman blinds, that fabric is dreamy!

The cabinetry is stunning. The beautiful design with the mirror back was all custom made and doesn’t it look incredible?

The bathroom is finished with custom cabinetry, marble bench tops and floors, and beautiful shiny nickel fixtures.

The living space is finished in the same gentle colour palette as the bedroom which makes the little cottage flow beautifully. It is a small space, but it has everything you need without compromising on style.

Off the living area is this delightful little dining area complete with banquette seating and two statement chairs. The singular chairs have open backs that allow the space to feel open, but they also have a graphic design that acts as another piece of interest in the room.

And finally the kitchen, wow, just wow!

The lovely cast iron setting on the deck was a lucky Gumtree find that was re-powdercoated to bring it back to it’s former glory.

Here are a few of my favourite pieces …

The Grande Events drinks tub is essential for keeping champagne cool at your summer soirees, it holds up to a dozen bottles and looks super stylish doing it! I have this one in my own home. It has featured in table settings for birthdays, dinner parties and New Years Eve, and FYI – It is equally as beautiful displaying potted flowers.

The New Bliss coverlet in white. Beautiful as a coverlet or casually draped at the end of your bed, the perfect weight for summer or an extra layer in winter, this coverlet ticks all the boxes.

The Ming pumpkin jar, Hello, it’s blue and white … no further explanation needed.

The Versailles range of glassware by La Rochere in pressed glass is classic, timeless and beautiful. I also have these tall glasses in my collection, I love setting the table with them, they add a lovely textured element with their decorative design inspired by the Palace of Versailles. I do love having a little bit of France at my table.

The Amelia Table Cloth, 8/10 seater. I have a big dining table, at 270cm long I find it near impossible to find table linen. Gloria Linen and Home has the best range of gorgeous table linens I’ve found, this one is particularly pretty in a blue and white floral.

Did somebody say high tea? The Ritz serving stand is perfect for any occasion, but I can see it piled high with petit fours and macarons, ohhhhh!

Who knew doing laundry could be so luxurious! The Laundress range from New York is colour-safe, eco-friendly and not tested on animals. There is a range of products for laundry and housekeeping. And can we just talk about that packaging, too gorgeous to put away, leave it out on display!

I was lucky enough to grab a coffee with one half of the super stylish faces behind Gloria Linen and Home, and even though she’s a little shy, I was able to find out a little bit more about Gloria Linen and Home.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you started Gloria Linen and Home?

I have always been a design obsessive, and I’d sooner buy a new throw or cushion than a pair of shoes!

It frustrated me that it was so difficult to find beautiful, classic homewares in Australia where we seem to see the largely same thing everywhere. I wanted to create a beautiful online emporium that truly delights our customers with an ever-evolving range.

To that end, we source our products from all over the world and I absolutely love being able to share my finds with our customers.

Why the name Gloria?

I named the business after my Grandmother who was the epitome of style and sophistication. She was a woman ahead of her time who exuded elegance and grace in every sense. These are the hallmarks of the philosophy behind everything we do here at Gloria.

You have such a beautifully curated selection of products. Do you source and select them yourself?

Yes, I source and select the entire product range. I’m always looking for special pieces that are timeless, classic and have a stylish edge. I love finding unique pieces that you don’t see everywhere. I am ever mindful of the expectations of our customers to showcase products that inspire and delight.

Do you have a favourite piece from your range?

Oooh, it’s difficult to choose, but I’d have to say I adore the French range of table linens by Olivades. The quality and weight of the fabrics and the provincial style prints are truly exquisite. The ‘Aurun’ vintage table cloth in Navy with the oversized paisley motif is my firm favourite, particularly for breezy outdoor Summer entertaining.

What is your design style in your own home?

I’ve always preferred classic over contemporary and a calming neutral colour palette. Classic architectural features such as timber joinery, natural flooring and stone bench tops provide a strong visual framework in any interior. It is worth taking the time to get this right as it anchors every other element in a room.

What is your latest interior décor crush?

I would have to say that I’m obsessed with trays of all shapes and sizes for different purposes. A simple glass or chrome tray is a lovely way to organise and display chic desk accessories, and is equally at home on the bathroom vanity for perfume, jewellery and a small vase of fresh flowers.

I love the resurgence of the retro sideboard display of barware with a classic mirrored tray, chic glassware and a traditional ice bucket. Our ‘Chicago’ range channels a sophisticated ‘Gatsby’ style and looks divine paired with our ‘Round mirrored tray’.

Do you like to stick with the classics or follow trends?

As soon as something becomes a trend, it instantly loses appeal! I have an aversion to mass production of any kind. Artisnal, unique and timeless pieces that are beautifully crafted never lose their lustre and transcend passing fads. This philosophy holds true in fashion and interiors alike.

What’s next for Gloria Linen and Home?

We will be expanding our range in 2016 to include furniture, rugs, mirrors and a much broader selection of beautiful decorative accents and bed linens. Stay tuned!

What’s on your current wish list?

Our Soiree drinks tub filled to the brim with French champagne! The Soiree has become a firm favourite in my circle of friends as a stylish and unique gift ‘for him’ instead of the standard issue socks, books and CD’s.

Cathy’s house …

I follow so many people on Instagram that have great homes with their own style and personality, I’m going to try and share lots of them with you this year. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a peek inside somebody else’s home, and you might just find some new friends to follow on IG! You might remember the gorgeous home of Ingrid I shared late last year, if you missed it you can find it here.

Today I’m sharing Cathy’s home with y’all. It has been featured in Australian Homes + magazine, and her master bedroom made the top 15 in Australian Home Beautiful’s Top 50 Most Beautiful rooms for 2015.

It is tropical and beachy, and it scream summer vacation. I think your going to love it!

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I work from home hairdressing. I’m a mum of 2 teenagers PJ and Shania and I’m married to a wonderful man named John , I’m a diy and homewares addict who loves all things home.

What made you choose your home and have you done any work to it?

We actually relocated our house 18 yrs ago onto our 2 acre property in Austral Sydney, and since then have done 2 major renovations and thankfully we are finally finished. The last reno was 2yrs ago when we added a master suite, which I can proudly say was a top 15 finalist in Home Beautiful 2015 in the 50 beautiful rooms competition a very proud moment, we also added a rumpus room study and fresco area.

I love your bed, the before and after pics look amazing, where did you find your inspiration?

As you know I love a good Diy and I made my bed head. In my bedroom I wanted a tropical look as I was inspired by a trip to Bali and Hawaii many years ago, I love to feel that I’m always on a tropical holiday, the bed head was a black wrought iron bed previously and It wasn’t going to suit the look I was after, my husband of course the practical man couldn’t understand why I would want to buy a new bed when that one was perfectly fine ( men just don’t understand ) so I made a bed head head and stained the wood, it came up gorgeous keeping the original bed.

I know your a bit of a DIY’er, tell us about some of your projects?

Other diys include my daughter’s furniture I painted ,a mosaic mirror, a pallet vertical garden, beaded chandeliers, and I’ve recovered and painted our dining suite which was my husband’s when he was a young boy.

What is your latest interior design crush?

My latest interior crush is concrete, so I’m loving polished concrete floors, benchtops , concrete pots and pendant lights, just loving the concrete look with a light timber mmmm.

Where are your favourite places to shop?

Some of my favourite shops are Freedom and Ikea. I love shopping online including Temple and Webster and supporting local businesses, and I love a good market.

What’s on your current wish list?

On my wish list interior wise is a moroccan wedding blanket but somehow I don’t think I’ll get …fingers crossed
