Entry makeover – part one

I’m sure indoor gardens with black rocks, black elephant statues, grass tree plants and green lighting were very fashionable once upon a time … maybe some people still like it, each to their own, it’s just not for me.

BEFORE

It’s the first thing you used to see when you walk through the front doors.
Our front doors are truly beautiful and one of my favourite things about this house, the black rock garden was detracting from the gorgeous french doors and giving the wrong first impression for our home.

AFTER

The entry is quite a large space, it’s open with high ceilings and beautifully bright natural light, but it is also an awkward space and has doors everywhere. I love entries and foyers with seating, somewhere to put on your shoes or sit and wait for the postman with your online shopping. The ‘black rock garden’ was the perfect spot to create a huge day bed and it was easier than you think.

Structurally I didn’t need to make any changes, most of the updates to this space have been aesthetic changes with lighting, fabric, paint and decor.

The frame work was already in place, it just needed some updating. I applied the same process that I did to the bench seats in the living and dining room here.
Removing the high gloss 2 pac paint finish and adding the moulding updates it to a more classic style that fits with the look I’m trying to achieve as we renovate our home.

The day bed seat and cushions were one of the most important choices I made in this space. Although I contemplated different colours, I decided to keep this area predominantly blue and white, it always look fresh, calm & inviting and I wanted to include lots of glossy green plants in blue and white pots.
I played with a few different fabric ideas for the seat cushion, I really wanted to use a fabulous blue and white pattern but I was mindful of the angular shape of the cushion and all the mirrors in this space, I decided it was going to look too busy and ended up choosing a plain fabric for the seat.
It’s a beautiful fabric crafted by a traditional silk mill, it has a delicious nubby texture like a natural fibre, but it is actually a high performance polyester that will withstand my kids and pets.

Handcraft Moonstone from Materialised

Since I chose a plain fabric for the seat, I went to town with the throw cushions and selected a stunning collection of blue and white cushions from Florence Broadhurst Fabric.

Florence Broadhurst is an Australian icon in wallpaper and fabric design. Her library consists of around 500 designs and lucky for us, Florence Broadhurst Fabrics are making a handful of them available to purchase, including some of her most well know classics. The designer fabrics are available by the metre in three different base fabrics with a cotton, velvet or brushed cotton feel.

I love the way the mix of textures, patterns and shades of blue all work together harmoniously.

I also changed the downlights to something a little more interesting. Finding a stylish light that works on the curved underside of the staircase was quite a mission, but I think the brass spotlight adds some warmth and a hint of vintage charm.

Seattle Wall light by Emac & Lawton

We will replace the floors eventually, that’s stage two of the entry makeover which will also include the staircase treads, I can’t wait for that! For now, I’ve added a natural jute rug to add some interest to the floors and break up the large expanse of empty space. It was really affordable and looks great.

The only other change we made in this area was to add sheer curtains on the huge glass sliding doors. The white sheer fabric gives the entire area a dreamy white glow that I just adore.

Tahiti Snow Sheers from Blinds Online

I am thrilled with this little makeover, it has made such a huge difference to this space and I love welcoming guests to our home now without having to explain ‘what on earth‘ the mess under the stairs was.

It’s also a favourite spot for our fur babies to sit and watch the world go by, or wait for us to get home. I’m pretty sure they think it was just put there for them.

Stay tuned for my office makeover next, followed by my master bedroom before Christmas.

Happy Styling!

My window has better clothes than I do!

It’s true!
My window has the most amazing new dress and I just had to share it with y’all.
She’s been naked for quite a while now and every time I looked at her I felt embarrassed by her exposed frames and glass.  Winter has been approaching and the lack of any window coverings made the house feel even colder and open to the cold winter nights.

BEFORE & AFTER
BEFORE & AFTER

Finally I decided to do something about it.
Choosing curtains can be such a pain, having those pushy sales people around to your house with their little folders of fabric and unwanted opinions. I have done this exercise so many times and I was not looking forward to wasting hours getting multiple quotes and still gasping with shock every time I finally received one back.

This time I decided to try an online service, I am using online shopping more and more these days so I thought it was worth a try. I looked at a few different sites and read lots of reviews and settled on Pret-a-Portiere. They supply made to measure curtains and drapes that are easy to buy and install yourself. They also supply to interior stylist and decorators worldwide.

I popped over to their website armed with my window dimensions and Pinterest ideas.
I knew I wanted linen, I am currently having a love affair with anything and everything linen and they have a whole section dedicated to linen drapery, I was happy to see so many options available. It was a hard decision, there is so many styles to choose from, but I decided to go with the Soho design with the double bottom banding. I have seen this type of curtain a few times in my favourite designer spaces and was excited when I realised I could achieve this look in my own home.

Next step is to choose your header style and colours, again, such a hard decision as there is so many different combinations to choose from. I went with a Double Pinch Pleat and 2.5 x fullness. I chose Snow and Mountain Blue as my colours.

IMG_0119

When you have made all your selections you will be given a quote right then and there, none of this – ‘give us all your details and then we’ll e-mail you stuff’, they give you a quote immediately.
You can chose to ‘add to cart’ and get your curtains underway or you can go back and try a different selection.

They only took a few weeks to arrive and I was completely blown away by the quality. I have had custom curtains made before, but these are amazing. I’m not sure if it’s the beautiful weight of the linen, the precise workmanship or the fact that they are just gorgeous, but I am totally in love with them.

I put hubby to work hanging them, which is really quite easy and I probably could have done it myself, but he was home and I know how much he loves me ordering him around.
My window is no longer naked, her linen dress is much more fabulous than anything in my wardrobe and the whole space finally feels finished and cosy.

IMG_0169

What do you think?
Curtains make such difference to a space, they make it feel complete. I love closing them at night to keep the warmth in and I’m sure they will be great in summer to keep the afternoon sun out. And who doesn’t love the glow of filtered light through linen curtains, it’s just dreamy!

About six months ago the gorgeous peeps and Ettitude sent me a pair of their bamboo lyocell pillowcases to try, oh my giddy aunt … they are so good!
Soft and smooth, and crazy comfortable!
So when they approached me to share a story with you about their Cloud Pink bedding, of course I agreed!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
They sent me a Bamboo Daydream Duvet Cover Set in Cloud Pink and the fight is on … the 2 teen girls of the house are squabbling over it likes it’s a bucket of gold.

For now, It has ended up in Arabella’s room, and we’d love to show you how pretty it looks!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It is a darling shade of pink, not a sugary pink like I was expecting, but more of a blush pink, almost peachy. If you’re are thinking that pink is just for little girls, you are so wrong, this shade is quite grown up and will work well with a range of colour palettes.

Now, when I said it was soft, I meant beyond babies bottoms SOFT!
Their sheet and duvet sets are made from organic bamboo lyocell. I could go on about how this fabric is one of the most sustainable textile materials of the 21st century, but really, I think this will interest you more …
Organic bamboo lyocell is gentle on sensitive skin and kind to our hair, you can really get your beauty sleep with these bamboo sheets!

If you suffer from acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or other skin conditions, organic bamboo lyocell is your new best friend. It is free from harmful chemicals, irritants, allergens and is hypoallergenic.  Bamboo sheets are breathable, bacteria-proof and moisture-wicking which means they keep your skin free from sweat and bacteria all night long. They are also thermo-regulating, so you can sleep under these beauties all through the seasons.

Real Homes: Dave and Jaime

Yay, I love doing these posts! I’m sharing another beautiful home that I discovered on Instagram. I follow so many people on Instagram that have gorgeous homes. Families actually live there, they are not styled for magazines, just a real home, with real people and real stuff. I’m hoping to share lots of them with you this year.

Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a peek inside somebody else’s home, and you might just find some new friends to follow on IG! Here are the links to few I’ve shared in the past –  Ingrid’s house, Mels’s house, Jo’s house.

Today we are meeting Jaime from @bay_beachhouse

Tell us a little bit about yourself ?

Dave and I have been married 13 years and have two children, Tom 11 years and Ivy 9 years. My husband is a Primary School Principal and I am Primary School Teacher. While my babies were little I took some time away from Teaching to study photography and found a love of newborn and family portraiture. I returned to teaching once my children were older and have only picked my camera up recently after deciding to document our journey with Bay Beachhouse. For as long as I can remember Dave has had a green thumb and a brilliant eye for colour. With his landscaping and gardening passion and my love of interior design and photography we have endeavoured to create a home that has character and warmth.

Why did you choose your current house?

We purchased our house in 2011 after stumbling across it whilst my husband was driving laps around the block waiting for me to come out of the hairdressers. We had three things we were looking for in a house. My husband wanted a large shed, the kids wanted a pool and I wanted a plantation style home with character. When we found Bay Beachhouse we knew we had the trifecta!

Did you have an idea of what you wanted to do with it, or did you decide after you moved in?

The renovation was designed by Jared Poole Design and all the building work was completed by a local builder Bob Smith who was the person we purchased the home from. Whilst much of the major building work was complete when we moved in we still had a considerable amount of work to do outside and some minor changes to make inside.

What changes have you made, tell us about it?

The most significant change to our home occurred before we moved in and this is when the home was converted from a two bedroom one bathroom run down shack to the home it is today. This involved a complete re-build with bedroom 2 and 3 the only original features left standing. The kitchen was converted into the main bedroom and newly built additions included the lounge room, outdoor room, ensuite, sunroom and kitchen with cathedral ceilings. On the outside we only have one original tree left standing and we have completely re-designed our entire yard to incorporate a new pool area, kids play area, formal garden and vegetable garden. Since moving in we have re-designed our main living area to include a fireplace and changed the colour and lighting scheme a number of times.

Do you have any further plans, or are you finished?

We are always making changes and this year we are looking at incorporating VJ paneling in our bedrooms, kitchen and lounge room and building a fire pit in our rear garden. Our long term dream is to build a guest house at the rear of our property and add an additional level to the main house which will enable us to have views of the ocean which is only a couple of streets away.

What’s your favourite space in your home, and why?

Our favourite space is certainly our rear indoor/outdoor verandah. It has been designed to capture the sea breeze all year round and it has a great view of our swimming pool. It links to our kitchen, lounge room and main bedroom via recycled French doors which completely opens our entire home. We spend many summer days and special occasions in this space and many of our family and friends comment on the relaxed feel of this area.

12407510_1560228900967892_1743469464_n

How would you describe your style?

We both always say, “Less is more.” I am crazy about ‘white’ and find myself constantly drawn to a style that reflects a beachy, relaxed vibe. I do think however, that my husband is a little OCD with his hedges and lawn! His hedges are always cut to perfection and his lawn is cared for so meticulously.

12677673_926898264084266_1073820283_n

Where do you find your inspiration?

The inspiration for our home comes from the beach houses of Noosa and Byron Bay. We love the relaxed white and bright designs that can be found on the beaches of these holiday destinations. Instagram has been a huge part of our renovation journey and we follow many amazing stylists/interior designers and landscapers whom have similar styles to ours.

12783303_1399469203687916_1009257798_n

Where are you favourite places to shop?

My favourite place to shop is at Peregian Beach Village as they have an eclectic mix of homeware stores with a beachy/boho vibe. I have purchased a number small pieces of furniture and homewares from these beautiful shops.

What’s on your current wish list?

We are about to build a fire pit with a surrounding outdoor deck in preparation for Winter. I would love to redesign our sunroom by stepping out of my comfort zone and bringing a boho vibe to that space.

Isn’t it beautiful! I feel like a tropical vacation just looking at it!
