Christmas at the Little house

Christmas looks a little different at our house this year. We have a new home with a fireplace + mantle (a stylists dream), my style seems to be evolving (all by itself) and I’m using a darker + moodier (still colourful) palette than I ever thought I would!

I can’t wait to share it with you as part of the #itsacolorfullifetour hosted by the most colourful, creative and stylish Jennifer from Dimples and Tangles + Jewel from Jeweled Interiors.

If you have come from DIY Decor Mom … WELCOME!

As most of you know, we are slowly renovating our new forever home and while half the house is still stuck in the 1990’s, I focused on the areas that we have started updating, so today I want to share our living and dining room with you, including my Christmas tree and mantle decor.

I feel like my tree needs an introduction, like one of those choir singing, spotlight shining with red velvet curtains opening type introductions. That’s how much I love my tree this year!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love tartan and plaid at Christmas (or anytime), so when I saw these decorations it was love at first site and I decided to create a tree to compliment them.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I pulled the colours from this bauble and ran with it …. red, white and blue with some gold sparkle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Of course I had to finish it with tartan wrapping paper and pretty satin bows.

I haven’t had a mantle to decorate for a few years, I was so excited to have one this year, especially after our fireplace makeover, and it didn’t disappoint.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I decided to do a big asymmetrical garland and bring in the colours from the tree. Christmas is in summer in Australia so I chose flowers that bloom during our Christmas like magnolias and blue astrantias.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It compliments my tree beautifully and I absolutely adore it.

Side note; I get asked at least once a day what I used and how I’ve secured my garland. I used a base garland, one of those flexible ones where you can bend the wired foliage, and secured it to my mantle with three 3M plastic hooks. Then I layered it with a couple more garlands which I kept in place by bending some of the wired foliage around it in a few spots. Lastly, I poked multiple picks and flowers into it to make it lush and full. It really is much easier than it looks!

Since I went all out with the garland I had no room left for stocking holders, but what’s a fireplace without stockings right? I made this stocking hanger from 2 very simple stocking holders and a curtain rod I had laying around. It was super easy, very affordable and I think it looks great!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I also made the stockings with remnants of fabric and satin ribbon trim. I downloaded a pattern online and changed it slightly to create a longer and skinnier stocking. I lined them with pretty florals and ginghams, then trimmed them with satin ribbon which I left long at the ends to tie into a bow.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The whole living room came together beautifully and I’m really happy with it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These little Nutcrackers are probably my favourite Christmas decorations this year, they are so sweet and in the perfect shades of blue and white.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Everything gets a ribbon bow at Christmas time!

The dining room adjoins the living room so I kept a similar colour palette with red, white and blue.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Buckley, my beautiful reindeer, is the centre of attention with his gorgeous gold antlers and floral display.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My plate stack is not too high this year, as I said earlier, Christmas in Australia is in summer and it’s usually hot and humid. We usually don’t feel like eating a huge meal and often end up having seafood and salad.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had to use the baby blue gingham chargers because I am totally in love with them, and the sweet little red truck plates add the touch of Christmas I needed. The red dinner plate is a great connection to pull the colours together.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love the large scale gingham chargers on the smaller scale gingham tablecloth, the rattan placemats break them up enough so that you don’t go cross eyed.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I restrained myself with the foliage on the table this year, there is enough going on with Buckley, the apple wreaths on my cabinet and the living room decor. I’ve also learnt to leave a little room on the table for extra drinks!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is probably one of my simpler Christmas tables, but I love the combination of patterns and colours, what do you think?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Around the corner from the dining room I’ve created a little forest with sparkly trees and my dream home …

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I want my builder husband to build me this perfect pink house to live in.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Actually I wouldn’t mind living in a forest of sparkly Christmas trees either!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m also a sucker for a pretty bell, this one is the perfect blue. I painted this mirror with paint I mixed myself and coincidentally the bell is nearly exactly the same shade.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Okay, that’s about all I’ve done so far. I’m still working on my pink tree and cocktail station, yes I said pink tree, I don’t mean pink decorations, I mean PINK TREE, stay tuned for that one!

Now, pop over to BD Interior Design and continue on the #itsacolorfullifetour. Everyone has gone to so much effort and I’ve been so inspired by how creative everyone is!

My Last Minute (don’t panic) gifts for EVERYONE!

Flashback to yesterday … I was PANICKING!

I am usually THAT person that has everything beautifully wrapped in pretty papers and perfectly paired ribbons, placed under the tree with care and ready for Christmas by the first week in December.

Yes, I am usually THAT person that everyone does massive eye rolls at while they are loaded with coffee, armed with their shopping list and battling the crowd during midnight shopping hours.

This year, I am NOT that person!

Yesterday, I wrote out my list and cleared my calendar for the entire day to shop, I had 12 hours of uninterrupted shopping hours to get it done.
Yes, I was panicked, but I was a lady on a mission!

I started at the stores that have something for everyone, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and West Elm and I took you all with me in my Insta-stories, which is what brought me here … It seems I am not alone and the messages started flooding in –
What one is that?
What size does that come in?
Does that come in another colour?
Is that available online?
Do I still have time to order online?

Because we all know I believe sharing is caring, here I am, sharing all my last-minute gifts complete with links direct to the website for you to shop.

Let’s Go!

Starting with one of my favourite gifts for just about anyone – a lantern, pair it with a beautiful candle and tie it with a bow, no wrapping required!
I couldn’t pick just one, so here’s a few that I love, but really, they are all gorgeous.

I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t love a snugly blanket!
The Cosy Pom Pom throw was actually on my 16 year old daughters Christmas list, one of her friends has one and she was raving on about how soft it is, then she came in store with me and made me feel it … we bought it and now I’m the one raving on about how soft it is. It’s seriously softer than any blanket I have ever felt before!

Christmas is entertaining season, buy one of your friends some bar tools and let them make you cocktails, it’s a win win!
I love this one finished in nickel with gorgeous leather accents.

Do you know someone who has a crown? Then I’ve found the perfect jewellery box!
The McKenna range comes in 5 sizes, there’s one to suit everyone’s  jewellery collection. It also comes in a few different colours including white, porcelain blue and blush pink.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know I love a personalised gift.
Monogram everything I say! These vintage print mugs are fun and easy to gift to just about anyone on your list.

For your funky friend or family member who has everything – I bet they don’t have a salad plate with a shark sporting a bikini? I have one of these awesome plates hung on my wall, but they are equally as fun to eat from.

For the plant lover, these terrariums and planters would make a gorgeous gift paired with some fresh plants. Try some succulents or a fluffy fern.

I didn’t forget the kiddies!

But seriously, can I have a tea party with this Kitty tea set?
It is absolutely adorable!

Jewellery Boxes are one of my favourite gifts to give to kids, they love to have somewhere special to hide their secret treasures. I used to find the funniest things in my kids … random buttons, shells, parts from board games and body parts from broken toys.

I love wooden toys and Pottery Barn Kids has the best range around!

They have some fabulous train sets, Orly loves this one …

This is a few of my favourite toys that my own kids had/have. They are tried and tested by my kids and they have been played with again and again, some of them for all 3 kids and they are well loved.
These are toys and games that I gift often because I know they will be favourites.

The Gotz Doll collection by Pottery Barn Kids is truly a gift your little one will cherish for years. They have a few Special Editions out for Christmas including the three below that I thought were absolutely gorgeous.
What I love about gifting a child with one of these dolls is that you pretty much have every birthday and Christmas covered for the next few years with all the fun accessories. You can add to their collection every year with everything from awesome outfits to doll size furniture and even a horse stable and pony!

Are you lucky enough to be buying for a baby this Christmas?
Then you are going to go ga-ga when you see these animal chairs and rockers! They are super soft and snugly and come in a range of adorable animals, good luck choosing just one!

OK, So that was all the gorgeous gifts that I shared on my Instagram yesterday.
I hope that has answered all your questions!

Here’s a few more things I found while scrolling the websites that may have just jumped in my cart, or are currently on my wish list.

This jumped in my cart … because you can only get it at Christmas so you simply must make the most of it!
I know y’all go crazy for the Peppermint Bark and I get it, it’s pretty good …. but the TOFFEE!
The Toffee is something else and I may have just ordered 2 tins that I will be hiding and not sharing with anyone, yes I’m greedy like that!

On my wish list … because I want to feel like I’m in a fancy hotel everyday!

And lastly, on my wish list … because everyone loves a good vase. I adore the organic feel of this range that is crafted by hand inn terracotta and finished with wrought iron handles.

So here’s the low down –
The cut off for online orders to be received by Christmas is midday 21st December (Friday) for small parcel deliveries to Metro Sydney, Melbourne  and Brisbane only,
OR
You can shop in store until Christmas Eve with FREE gift wrapping.

Oh, and remember how I said I had 12 hours of kid free, uninterrupted shopping time … I got my list ticked off in just a couple of hours!
Do you think I went home to the kids?
No way, I made the most of those hours of bliss! I sat in cafes and sipped coffee, went out to lunch with my daughter and went clothes shopping, because I always need another pretty dress!

Happy Shopping!

It’s a Colourful Life – Christmas Home Tour

This year I was invited to join some of my favourite bloggers on a Christmas home tour.
The gorgeous Jennifer from Dimples & Tangles and Rachel from Pencil Shaving Studio put this one together and I am so excited with the group of gorgeous girls they have handpicked for you!

Colorful Life Christmas 18 Graphic
Firstly, let me just say I am totally chuffed to be part of such a fabulous group. I feel like I’ve found my tribe with these colour loving gals, their homes are bright, bold and beautiful and I love them all.

OK, If you are following the tour, you’ve probably just come from the self-proclaimed freak herself, Jenna from Rain on a Tin Roof, her pops of bright colour and amazing wallpaper selections always makes me smile.
(The full list of the home tour is at the bottom of this post)

Let’s go!
Today I’m going to share my living room and bedroom with you.

I recently discovered plaid, I mean I knew it existed, but I have ever used it in my home before. Then I found a fabulous plaid at Pottery Barn that has a touch of blue in it, so it mixes back with my #blueandwhite home beautifully. Now, I have a little obsession with plaid, OK, make that a BIG obsession with plaid! It was my inspiration for this years Christmas colour palette, I pulled the red and green from the plaid, and added it to my existing blue and white decor.

I’ve also added lots of metallic accents like mercury glass, silver and galvanised metal to give it some sparkle!

Lets start in my living area where you are welcomed with pops of red and lots of plaid which is perfect with my blue and white ticking sofa.

E39C5EAF-9762-4C83-A77E-F07CAD11076D

My favourite thing is this room is the sweet pillow with embroidered and beaded details. The colour and art have a vintage vibe that I adore, and the map of the North Pole has been a great conversation starter with the kids.

062CAACF-C4AC-4955-A7DA-077A2ADDD9D4

I also adore these gorgeous little sugared fruit decorations that I found at my supermarket for 80 cents each, proving that it doesn’t cost a fortune to decorate your home!

9A218279-A6F4-4511-BFFB-B3E453D0C8AB

Just off the living room and next to the kitchen is this little area that I have turned into a FROZEN hot chocolate bar. It’s summer in Australia and too hot for the traditional hot chocolate so we’ve put in our own spin on it. The kids absolutely love it and it’s getting quite the workout!

Everyone has their own mug and we have a few spares for guests.

BE25C3E4-25E8-4BC3-80F8-819081D052FA

I designed the artwork myself and my Dad brought it to life. It was a quick and easy activity and I love that it is personalised with our family name.
I bought the large frame from a local thrift store for a few dollars, the frame was originally a yellow pine wood, it only took me a few minutes to spray paint it white. My Dad has a giant printing machine so he printed my artwork to look like a blackboard, I’m sure you could get this done at your local printers. Then I added 2 small brass rings to the top of the frame to use the ribbon for hanging.

21D95027-62E1-4944-B2E0-835CE22CA4A1

And as for the frozen hot chocolate, here’s a couple I prepared earlier …

Let’s go to my bedroom next where the backdrop of my blue walls really makes the red and plaid pop!

15F7DCBB-BE7A-45EA-A72C-5D5C9B711A9B

I’ve paired it with all white bed linen to keep it from looking too dark, and added the Merry & Bright pillowslips for a festive touch.

E693BF9F-7096-4AEA-9004-1E3EF8F80A7B

I popped some traditional Christmas flowers – amaryllis – on the bedsides in these gorgeous glass vases, I love the little bit of sparkle the mercury glass vase brings.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my colourful Christmas home tour!
I’ll be sharing more of my Christmas decor over the next few weeks on my Instagram here.

Now, refresh your cup of tea or glass of wine, and pop over to all of Tuesdays and Wednesday’s home tours, they are listed below, seriously guys, there is so much inspiration in these gals homes and style, you don’t want to miss them!

Then tomorrow start with Pencil Shavings Studio and say hello to Rachel who loves blue and white nearly as much as I do. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us!

Gift Guide 2018 – The Little Ones

Buying presents for kids is so much fun, but if the children in your life are anything like mine the last thing they need is more plastic toys.

I’ve found some great gifts that the kids will love but that are also practical, pretty or useful.

Before I start, just a little bit of housekeeping for those of us that are not as tech savvy as the young ones.
If you click on a product I have shared in the COLOURED writing, it will take you directly to the website of that item.
No judgement here, I understand … you don’t know these things until you are told!

Lets start with some pretty pink presents.

The Little Faces Slippers are super sweet with their pom pom ears and embroidered face. They are lined with sherpa to keep your tootsies warm and have an anti-slip tread on the soles. They are available in 2 sizes to fit older kids and teenagers.

What girl wouldn’t go crazy for a Unicorn Hair Turban? My girls love hopping out of the shower or pool and popping on a hair turban. They are made from thirsty microfibre to soak up water fast, and how fun is that unicorn horn!

Is your little one heading off to sleepovers yet? A Cosmetic Bag is so handy for them so keep all their toiletries together when visiting Grandma or their friends houses. This one is made with an easy-wipe fabric that is machine washable, so functional but fabulously fun with those cute bunny faces.
Fill it with pretty bows and hairbands for a gorgeous girly gift.

EE1E711C-60EE-4DDF-A668-4ECE6FA4F759
Meet Ratsy …..
She’s a little fashionista with her cute outfit and fluffy collar. She is as pretty as she is cuddly and would be adorable sitting on a bed or snuggled under the covers. Every kid needs a bedtime companion, I think Ratsy is perfect.

A5088F37-452D-43DD-93D0-37CD9D307CF5
If your kids are as grubby as my littlest 7 year old, a towel comes in handy for so many occasions. I keep one in my car for cleaning up spills, wrapping him in when he’s been jumping in puddles and keeping him warm when he is positive he doesn’t need a jacket then complains of being cold the minute we leave the house.
Oh, and apparently you can only take ‘cool’ towels to your friends houses for swimming, this Beach Pareo is a little lighter than a plush towel so it folds up smaller, but it is still super absorbent and soft. This one has a large anchor on it and passes the ‘cool’ test with my kids.

Again, the Cosmetic Bags, smaller for the boys as they don’t generally have as many bits and bobs as the girls. Orly uses this one for his toothbrush and toothpaste for sleepovers, but he also uses it for his goggles and swimming cap at school swimming. Fill it with sweets and tie it in a bow for a fun gift.

I found these light-weight slip-on Shoes that can be worn in the water or on the land. I got them for Orly to wear for boating or jet-skiing, but he has found them so comfy that he has been wearing them everywhere. I would definitely recommend them for any kids that don’t like shoes, Orly says it feel like he is just wearing socks.

1397D160-C526-4BED-8D79-6F64530F1B6BMeet George, he’s Orly’s new best friend.
If your child has a puppy on their Christmas list … I’ve found the perfect one, he’s much more affordable, he doesn’t eat much and you’ll never need to pay an expensive vet bill.
George also looks very handsome sitting on a bed or shelf.

E042E514-42F8-4422-BEF1-51BA7E63670B

Maybe they take after their mother, but something that my girls always love is a room makeover. Choose some pretty new bed linen and a few key decor accessories for a fresh new look.

I love this hand block printed Kantha with it’s pretty pink floral design. It’s perfect for any age from babies to teenagers, my 16 year old has it in her room and still loves it.

C62FAA32-6AEC-4A12-82E4-4EDD3B20780AEvery little kid loves a special box to stash their treasures.

My daughter loves this sweet Jewellery Box, she’s had hers for a few years now and uses it everyday for her jewellery and secret girls business. She loves the fact that it has a key so she can protect her secrets, and it plays the music of ‘Swan Lake’ when it is opened.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m not sure whether the boys would be as excited by a bedroom make-over, but my son loves a soft and snuggly blanket or bedcover. He doesn’t really care what it looks like, but he’s quite particular about how it feels. His latest favourite is this padded Kantha in patchwork shades of blue. It is a great weight for Spring through to Autumn and is great to layer in Winter.

BE38E75D-68E6-4FFA-9BFF-1B976A51ADEF

Boy still love somewhere to keep their treasures, but since they are always on-the-go I chose a Little Red Wagon on wheels so they can take it with them. Orly loves his, he wheels it around from room to room with his favourite toys and it keeps all his stuff of the floor, everyone is happy.

ED7C797C-CE54-468E-BF71-1493134DACB2

I hope you got some ideas for the little people in your life.
If I find anything else that is super cute and needs to be shared I will add it to this post, so check back before you start shopping.

Happy CHRISTMAS Shopping!
